Sturgis Run 2007 - Road Dogs

Last summer I got to go Sturgis during Bike Week. My wife was okay with it, as long as I "looked, but didn't touch." I rode out of So Cal on a Friday morning with my friends Roy, who was on a Road King, Dan on an Ultra Classic, and Steve on a Hayabusa.

We headed north on I-15 past Las Vegas on into Utah for lunch in St. George. From there we made it to Provo, where we stayed the night.

We met up with Dan's brother-in-law the next morning. He was coming from northern California. From there we made it to Hot Springs, South Dakota, where we shared a room. ( I had to sleep on couch cushions on the floor)

We were getting close now. The next morning we rolled into Sturgis. It was impossible to park on Main St., so we found a church parking lot 2 blocks away and paid $5.00 per bike. It was great to be there and to get off the bikes. We were all saddle sore at that point.

Sturgis is my kind of place!! Beer every 10 feet or so and harder stuff for those so inclined. The women were scantily clad. I actually walked passed one girl on a very busy section of Main St. who had nothing on but paint!!

The bikes were mostly Harleys and a lot of customs too.

Outside of Sturgis are some of the best touring roads in the world. We rode to Deadwood, Spearfish Canyon, Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Monument, still under construction. In Custer State Park, the buffalo walk right past you. They are enormous.

We rented a 3 story cabin in the Black Hills. It was off the main road, about 3 miles of uphill dirt and gravel to get to it. Not a good recipe for keeping your bike clean.

Our buddy Steve, the only non-Harley rider, was the only one to have problems with his bike. He lost the fuel pump outside of Sturgis and had to have his bike towed to Rapid City. He was down for 3 days. We all felt bad, but no way was he riding bitch on any of our bikes.

Steve finally got his bike back and we had a great stay in South Dakota. The time to head home was here. We couldn't seem to all agree on the best way home so I decided to go my own way. After 8 days with those guys I needed my space, so I went home a different way. We all made it home safely. I'm planning on going again next summer and fly my wife to Denver, where I'll pick her up and we'll ride together into Sturgis.
